Good God this book is right up my alley and I can't find it available outside of Australia anywhere. Come on, Penguin! The girls crave mortuary satire!
The book was written explicitly as an expression of parental grief when Anne and Stan lost their daughter to leukemia at 5 years old. Christopher also still talks very candidly about this and how that loss truly changed his parents and set Anne on the path to being the specific artist she would eventually become. Claudia is Michele - or at least the perfect version of her that could live forever, but ultimately cannot. She is at once a perpetual, almost divine child as well as being fleeting and fragile. L&L began as sort of stand-in characters for Anne and her husband and eventually transformed into what Christopher describes as the past version of Anne and who she transformed herself into while learning how to survive that deep, consuming grief.
Claudia is doomed from the start because to capture thar child and force her to stay rather than to let her grow (or accept her mortality) is the ultimate cruelty. Michele never had the chance to grow up. She is frozen in time as that perpetual and fragile, divine child.
I feel like claudia was going to be a doomed charecter no matter what. Even if she had the best life. She was 5. She barely has any human experience. That IF she has any at all. Cus how much experience can a 5 year old have?. So would she really know how to be human?. Or have any human values? because she grew up and matured as a vampire. Her body will never grow she will always be in the body of a 5 year old. 5!! At least show claudia was 14. That's not that much better but a 14 year old can be perceived as a teenager at least. But 5? That's a toddler. She could never have a lover. Everyone will see her as a child. Like, imagine if being, lets say, 200 years old with the body of a 5 year old. You can never have lover. You cant even have fledglings either cus yourself simply too small to make one. It would be so so hard to be alone too or To live alone cus again, you have the body of a 5 year old.
I wish i was better at analysing or saying my thoughts but damn, Claudia's story is really sad. They doomed her the moment they turned her.
Also,
we reeled about the room as if to the wildest waltz. Father and Daughter. Lover and Lover.
