UA, Chernivtsi. A stylist and a journalist. Kind of hard to describe my bookish taste, but I read a lot of nonfiction for my work.

Getting the most out of a book's associated countiry/culture.

This year I am aiming to diversify my reading with books set in different countries or by authors of different cultures. It has been fun so far, but I am currently reading a nonfiction book about South Korean beauty culture, and it still feels like there is not enough information about this country.

I tried to search for some articles and videos (in English) but didn't find anything interesting. Some days after, I began to wonder if somebody else tries to fully "immerse" themselves in a country they are reading about. And if so, how do you achieve this?

    💔

I've read the Ukrainian edition. The English language review is at the end.

Ukr.

Eng. This compilation is everything I don't like about poetry. Over-the-top tragism, monotonousness, and a teenage-like maximalism. So, why did I read it? Because you can't live in Chernivtsi without hearing Mihai Eminescu's name, and, well, I became curious.

He has some poems about the city and Bukovyna; I can't say they were really remarkable. In my opinion, all of his poetry is classical in its structure and meaning. But I can't say for sure, because I read very little of it.

The experience was also worsened because this edition is quite old. It came out in the 70s and has a lot of remarks about how great the USSR is, which actually has no difference from imperialistic countries, which Eminescu was really against.

I didn't lower my rating more because I can't judge the text itself on a professional level, but I didn't enjoy reading it.
