Within These County Lines

Within These County Lines

Brian Zepka

Eighteen-year-old Stetson Delancey never thought breaking up with his boyfriend would turn him invisible. In Penango County, Pennsylvania, high school couples carve their names into the legendary Ardor Tree, a rite of passage said to grant love that lasts. Stetson and his boyfriend were no exception. But a bitter breakup just before college splinters their future, and in a moment of anger, Stetson does the unthinkable: he hacks their names from the tree. That’s when everything in his rural hometown goes from boring to bizarre. Shadows flicker where they shouldn’t. Strangers pass by like he’s not even there. And some people stop seeing him altogether. With just two months left in Penango and his college dream slipping away, Stetson races to uncover the tree’s secrets before he vanishes for good. But when he meets a boy only he can see—a boy who may have secrets of his own—Stetson begins to wonder if breaking free from his hometown means letting go of everything or learning to hold on to what matters. WITHIN THESE COUNTY LINES is a queer coming-of-age novel about the unraveling of first love, hometown magic, and how sometimes we can’t uncover the truth about others without confronting the truth about ourselves.

Ellen is a repressed, self hating queer jewish woman in the 80s working for a notable film restoration company. One day she is asked to restore a recently found cult horror silent film full of depravity, gore, and death. Reluctantly Ellen begins working in the film and slowly it begins bleeding out of the film and into her life….

This haunted film novel was intense, gory, and disturbing. Some scenes were so visceral and disgusting I was literally cringing while reading. Ellen is not a likeable character but as the novel progresses you understand her more, and get a look into the generational trauma continually allowed to persist in her family.

I was shocked with how much I loved this book considering it took me a bit to get into it, once the horror starts it doesn’t let up!

Trigger warnings for toxic family, rape, blood, gore, and lots of sexuality. If you’re not turned off by those triggers and want a good horrifying read absolutely try this one out.

Eden Fox returns to her home one day to another woman claiming to be her, and even worse her husband agrees…. Suddenly locked out of her own home and no one believing her to be the real Eden, sets everything into motion.

This was a really twisty thriller, I didn’t really understand what was happening until the very end. I enjoyed the audiobook a lot, it had different voice actors and background sounds which I know some find annoying, but I actually enjoy.

While I enjoyed this thriller it was a little out there, a lot of the twists and turns I found myself asking “why though?” A lot. If you can suspend disbelief and just go with the flow this is a fun thriller worth a try.

If it’s hard for you to do that, maybe skip this one. I look forward to reading more by this author!
