I can’t tell you how much I hate this book. But let me start with the good points first:
I loved the Victorian Mansion.
I loved the spooky ghost story.
I loved the mystery about grandma and that it is solved in the end of the book.
I loved Sibby.
And Daya.
And I liked the plot about rich / powerful people thinking they can do everything in the world. Human trafficking is a thing and I think the topic in this book is similar to what’s going on in real life.
And that’s all. Sadly, those parts are waaaay too short and felt more like an unfinished thought without a rhyme or reason. So it only helps to get the book 2,5 stars for me. Now let’s talk about the bad part. This contains spoiler. So. Spoiler ahead.
Addie is the worst pick me out of all time. The book is about child trafficking and she’s an adult but she’s soooo pretty and soooo special that people forget about being pedo and want HER? That’s not how it works and I’m SICK of FMCs that are portrayed being so special, yet they are more than your average Jane Doe. She’s a plain character without any depth. Don’t get me wrong, the author tries to make her special. But she ends up being just the normal female see through character we know from EVERY YA book from the early 2000s. Call her Bella swan, she’s soooo anti social and sooo beautiful bla bla bla. She plays tough but isn’t. Author failed everything here sadly. I’m so sorry for being mean. ALSO WHY DOES SHE CRY EVERY TIME SHE’S HAVING SEX??! JUST DON’T HAVE SEX PLEASE, GOOOOOSH.
Now about the smut part: I hate it. You can sense that the author wanted to balance the CNC (consensual non consent) kink but she failed MISERABLY. It’s just like witnessing a woman being raped. But then after everything she changed her mind and liked it. And then again he rapes her and after all of that she’s fine with it. But not after they are finished. Not before. That’s just bad writing and trivializing SA. That’s NOT cool. Later in the book Addie finally admits that she likes being forced and that was the only smut scene I could (barely) enjoy. Only for Addie than going back again to “no I don’t want you” and being raped again. How funny is that. (It’s not)
Now let’s talk about Zade. Zade with an underground organization committed to save victims of child trafficking. He’s murdering the perpetrators. And then after he’s done that he goes STRAIGHT TO STALKING AND RAPING A WOMAN BECAUSE HE WANTS HER? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH HIM? Again: the author miserably failed portraying a morally grey character. He’s just a walking contradiction I swear to God. And then when he meets Daya in the end, his first words are “Addie haven’t you told her about my big D?” EXCUSE THE FUCK OUT OF ME WHAT? This guy is not tough. This guy is not cool. This guy is a big fat loser oh my Gosh.
I could rant about this book for years but I think I’ve said enough for you to understand why I hate it.
