I’ve seen a lot of comments saying that this main character is exactly like the last one (Kristen) I’m here to tell you that’s not the case, at least not from my perception. This main character (Sloan) is tolerable, and I am reminded of the comparison because I literally want to push Kristin off the side of a waterfall—not saying I’d kill her, just saying I’d never look back to check—every time I’m reminded she exists and shows up on page (its an interconnected standalone ).
So far though, this is fine. lol so we’ve improved from the first in this series!

Listen, I was sufficiently warned. I was told not to go back, but when I had a long flight and it showed up on my Libby app, I decided I could keep it in mind that this is a very old book and she’s grown a lot as an author. My sibling in Christ. I hated these characters. I nearly broke a nail climbing down my wall and irritation. I will say what so many other others before me have cautioned: don’t go back. At least not to this one. (The main character was the most atrocious, self-centered and narcissistic, obnoxious character I’ve ever read without DNFing. The love interest, not much better and definitely walking toxic masculinity) that ending was absolutely insane and so out of left field that by the time we got to our happily ever after I was just staring an open horror waiting for it to be over.

At first, I was confused as to why people recommend this if you’ve read house of leaves. Now I understand, and I won’t be saying anything about my findings, but I’ll say it’s more of an after effect than part of the reading experience.
From about 20% on I was absolutely hooked and I had an idea of what was going, which is very unlike house of leaves. But it also bumped up my enjoyment of actually reading the novel quite a bit. And led me to seek answers after reading. (instead of checking my own sanity with the Internet and finding out everyone was equally frustrated) what I found was a lot. And I highly recommend doing your own research, starting from scratch if you want that full house of leaves experience. Otherwise there’s plenty of videos online that will deep dive into it for you and those were fun to watch as well! But in the meantime, enjoy the ride.
I went through this book entirely on a rickety old train through the countryside of Thailand and wouldn’t trade that for anything.
