Los tres largos relatos de Piñen podrían articularse en torno a la idea de relato de iniciación, pero en un sentido mucho más amplio que el que la literatura suele darle. Relato iniciático porque las narradoras de los dos primeros (acaso siempre la misma narradora) están paradas en esa bisagra chirriante y vertiginosa del paso de la niñez a la adolescencia, y en el tercero casi todo evoca ese momento. Pero sobre todo relato iniciático porque el descubrimiento no es solamente el del propio cuerpo ni el de su funcionamiento en el mundo, si no que los personajes que animan estas historias descubren también y sobre todo su propio origen: la pertenencia al pueblo mapuche, a su lengua mapudungun, a su cosmovisión, y como consecuencia la discriminación, la mirada espantada de los otros. En la periferia de Santiago, en un escenario de monoblocks que se crispan contra el cielo, adolescentes devotas devienen ateas, punks y anarcas; jóvenes pierden la vida de un balazo o por mano propia con una cadena alrededor del cuello; niñas perseguidas por hombres mayores que podrían ser sus padres y hasta por sus propios padres y tíos: la femineidad como un estigma, una entrada violenta al mundo de los adultos. Y el mapudungun flotando en las escenas, reverberando en palabras y frases sueltas como “un grito más fuerte que el sonido de la tarde… un socavón de aire tibio antes de la lluvia”.
