It doesn't even have to be the BEST T.Kingfisher to be a solid 5 star read. I just always want to spend more time in her books, because even the horror ones are warm.

For me, this was an excellent way to experience VanderMeer's particular kind of weird. The art is crowded and claustrophobic and abundant in a way that matches the story beat for beat - all of it done with a rapidograph technical pen. More than enough to get me interested in more of Theo Ellsworth's work

Ok, this could be a long shot. I have a very vague idea of the plot.
There exists this town/city, no one wants for anything, everyone lives in harmony. However, in order for this all to work, a sacrifice needs to be made. Every year someone needs to go down some where to live in agony, maybe die at some point. It is implied that the person is a child. It seems like the populous at large doesn't know, but maybe a few suspect.
I can't remember if I heard about this book from a YT video, from my husband (he doesn't remember telling me about this), or if it was one of my dreams conjured when I was reading the Silo trilogy.

I love a close-up little story where the larger storyworld keeps pouring in through the cracks leading to inevitable collapse of the one in particular and also every other structure. This novella surprised me by being what it was, and I liked it a lot.
