Idk guys, these great reviews have me super confused? I really loved Truth According to Ember and how chatacters were allowed to be messy adults, everyone felt real. This one is feeling like characters are check marks on tropes list and the dialogue was written to hand hold white folk through Native talking points. I'm having a hard time liking Avery, she feels super young and naive, but isn't? Fingers crossed for some development in the home stretch đŹ

Really loving how immersive the old timey language is, but it is slow going! The chapters from the Pastors journal feel exactly like watching a western.

Absolutely loved this story, the characters and ridiculous situations, the heartbreaking backstory and all the love and humor! Don't finish this book in public if you're a cryer...

Someone please write the screenplay, because this would go so hard. Also get Brendan Gleeson on the phone, he would be a great PJ

Loved everything about this. I love how much research went into the turn of the century setting and the inclusion of massive events that historically happened. I loved the struggle of Bennie trying to assimilate into various cultures and expectations, even when I wanted to shake him, and ultimately the decision everything boils down to. The love story is wonderful, the characters are dynamic and even (some) of the baddies grow on you. The narrators for the audio did terrific!
The only thing I'm a smidge sad about was that the merfolk are only referred to as relations of Posidon or have Greek origins, when there are so many stories from Taino and Boricua of similar creatures. Selfishly, I wanted to learn more!

Loved this! Told in the same jaunty humor as Princess Bride with a smattering of fairytales like Shrek, overall a great story of self discovery, rejecting expectations, and finding love.

These narrators are ruining this for me. I cannot stand this man whisper breathing in my ear for one more second. Putting this on pause until I can physically read the book.

Oh noooo, I was so excited for this because of my bg in classical archaeology and myths, but the audio narrator can't pronounce any of the Greek correctly đ
Hera seems to have been done dirty, "dipshit husband" has already been used twice and the dialogue is massively anachronistic. Idk readers, Someone You Can Build A Nest In was my top book last year... this is giving completely different vibes.
