I often feel disappointed by the final installment of a series. There is usually (in fantasy at least) a big, boring battle and the author is so under pressure to finish on a high because the series has been successful, you can feel the stress in their writing. I was trying to think of any book series I've read where the final book is at least as good as the rest of the series and I couldn't think of any. I understand that the threat has to be resolved and concluded, but I didn't enjoy the series because it was an endless battle, it's all the little between bits that make books special and it's disappointing when the final book misses those bits out entirely.
What book series do you feel have really good final installments? What were the most disappointing?
Inspired by Booklovergirl's post about struggling to finish trilogies.
