The story begins when Lady Sophia Sydney, a refined woman with a hidden agenda, managed to secure a position as a live-in assistant. Sophia was secretly driven by a desire for vengeance, believing Ross was responsible for her brother tragic death. However, she discovered that the magistrate was a deeply honorable, tortured man and the explosive mutual attraction that developed between them threatened to ruin them both.
The book highlight was the sheer and sexual tension between the main characters. The author wrote an incredibly compelling forbidden love dynamic, heightened by the forced proximity of their working arrangement. Ross Cannon was a fantastic, complex hero, restrained on the outside but harboring a simmering passion that Sophia effortlessly unlocks. Sophia herself was a clever, independent and active in her own agenda, making their intellectual and physical sparring highly entertaining.
However, Sophia’s quest for revenge was anti-climactically when she realizes how wrong she was wrong about Ross, leaving the central conflict feeling somewhat lost. To compensate for this loss of momentum, the book shifted heavily into a dark suspense subplot and the sudden introduction of a violent villain and a highly dramatic rescue felt incredibly rushed and disconnected from the beautifully paced character-driven romance of the first half.

The story followed Grant Morgan, one of London’s most clever and cynical Bow Street runners, who was called to the River Thames to rescue a drowning woman. He was shocked to recognize her as Vivien Duvall, a notorious and cold-hearted courtesan whom he thoroughly dislikes. However, when she wakes up with absolutely no memory of her identity, displaying a sweet, gentle and innocent nature, Grant finds himself deeply intrigued and highly suspicious.
The strongest aspect of the novel was the unique setting and the mystery itself. Grant Morgan was a solid, intelligent alpha hero, and the slow unraveling of Vivien past kept me turning the pages.
However, because Grant believed that the heroine was a manipulative courtesan who crossed him in the past, his initial treatment of her is quite harsh, bordering on vindictive and problematic. He kept her as a prisoner in his home while she was vulnerable and confused, creating a massive imbalance of power. Furthermore, once the truth behind her identity was revealed, the plot shifted into a highly melodramatic territory that wraps up a bit too fast.
