A short but stunning novel that deals in grief, fate, and the Fall of Troy. I really enjoy when books that take on the task of retelling stories from the Homeric Cycle move away from the myth and offer something human and real instead. While not necessarily historical fiction, this almost reads like stream of consciousness as Cassandra ruminates on the path of her life, through the siege of her city Troy, and the loss of her people -- a loss that happened gradually within themselves even before the war with the Greeks started. Cassandra's hind sight is 20/20 even as she thinks back on her time as a seer and prophetess for her people, although no one believed her. She was a woman with a strong sense of moral direction, which often grated against the grain the palace moved in. The translation was well done, and I believe this an excellent, if a bit forgotten, part of the myth-retelling sub-genre

This book didn't click for me in the way I thought it would. I still enjoyed the themes of finding yourself and finding a way to love yourself, but the fantasy element didn't quite work for me. It is a relatively quick and simple read though, which works well for it.
