I really liked the characters and the interesting plot turns. I enjoyed the imagination in the story, and I am looking forward to seeing the movie now! I didn't like the main characters inner monologue and I felt like the technical parts were written so detailed to show off to scientists that the author has done his research, but in the end the interesting story and characters outweighed the bits I did not like. Recommend this book!

This is likely going to end up being my favourite book of the year. It's definitely my favourite of the ones I've read thus far. I'm having a hard time writing a review I feel does it justice. The fact that this book only has 22 ratings and 7 posts (including like three of mine...) on here is absolutely criminal. Listen to me, those of you that read this, pick this book up and place it on the top of your TBR, it is worth your attention.

I was drawn in from chapter one, where the main character logs off from a VR celebration with complicated feelings we get the sense that she doesn't want to feel, and no one else seems to understand. But we the readers understand. We understand the MCs complicated feelings every step of the way and she just like us is uncertain of what is the right thing.

In Grace Chan's debut we get to enjoy her beautiful language and style which brings you on a trip of nostalgia, authenticity, future climate catastrophe, human evolution and love. The whole book is steeped in a sense of an enclosing circle of loneliness, grief, pessimism of the world around us and missing, but teases you just right with optimism for it to not really feel like a true dystopia. It gives you many things to think about and contemplate, but perhaps most importantly like all excellent speculative fiction: what does it really mean to be human?

I am desperate for a sequel.

  • Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos, #1)
    Thoughts from 43% (page 205)

"The Dying Earth II picked up where The Dying Earth left off, in plain prose this time, the sentence length and chapter content carefully guided by neuro-bio-monitored responses on a test group of 638 average hardfax readers."

This, from a book published in 1989, feels extremely poignant today.

    Motivated By Badges?

Okay this is so dumb but I'm constantly amazed by how many of my mutuals here get really excited by new quests and are motivated to read books they otherwise wouldn't probably look at primarily because Badge Shiny. Badge Shiny doesn't honestly hook me at all? And I get it's core to pagebound, and I'm not judging at all, it's fun to see everyone get excited even tho I find it baffling. I'm absolutely intrigued by the whole phenomenon. So I thought I'd make a post with a simple purpose.

Up-vote this post if you are motivated to read things you might not otherwise read because Badge Shiny. Down-vote this post if you are not motivated to read things you might not otherwise read because Badge Shiny (you may still read things you would have read anyway sooner because hey, you'll also get a badge, so why not, but acquiring the badge is not your main reason for doing the thing).

Explain or talk more about your views in the comments, should the spirit move you to do so.
