I’ve just started university (yay for going back to school), and now I’m in dire need of help. You see... I’ve never been good at taking notes when I read books or articles for class - It's a huge struggle for me to figure out what’s actually important and I end up underlining practically the entire page (see pic). It also means I spend an absurd amount of time on note‑taking, which really isn’t sustainable when there are 50–100 pages to read between each class.

Do any of you have tips or tricks that have worked for you? Luckily I find the material genuinely interesting, so the issue isn’t getting myself to read - it’s figuring out how to process it effectively and how to take notes without drowning in them.

EDIT: What I've been doing until now is reading a section, going back to underline what seems important, dictating my notes into Word in bulletpoint form, editing the dictation so it's completely correct, then reading the next section and starting over.

So I hear about mood readers, I hear about people with a stacked list, but I want to know who or what chooses your next read OTHER than you. I have my tbr and I’m not picky about the order as long as I feel like I’m not doing the same setting/time period really close together. I never want to actually choose my next read because I’m too indecisive; instead, I let external forces choose. Whether it’s a sale on thrift books or my local secondhand bookshop/cafe happens to have it, that’s what dictates my next read. Maybe you could say I let the universe decide, or maybe it’s more accurate to say I’m just cheap and love to hoard books. So add it in the comments, what’s your external decision maker for your next read?
