I had to continue consulting Wikipedia until I finished this book. Not so much for the story itself, but to learn who all the people (real and fictional) being referenced. While some, like Odysseus, Alexander the Great and Euclid, were obvious, others were more particular to the book’s recent past and locale. Unless you’ve studied 13th and early 14th Century Italian history, most people would be hard pressed to know who the figures were. The Wikipedia article relies heavily on the work of Dorothy L. Sayers, a novelist and playwright, who translated *The Inferno * in 1949.

It’s interesting that in Dante’s hell that fraud in its many forms, is considered worse than acts of violence. I suppose because fraud harms social relationships, both personal and public.
