“Fear is not an outward-pointing compass, my girl. You should not let it guide your way.”
I like the idea of looking inward when we feel afraid rather than letting that fear control our outward actions

“‘Beside myself with fatigue’ is the proper expression. The gargoyle’s stone brows knit. ‘If I were BESIDE myself, there would be two of me, and the washing would have taken half the time.’”
This made me giggle and makes me think the author might be good at sprinkling some humor into more somber situations which, if done right, can be really nice

This one wasn’t for me. I’m not a fan of the trope to begin with but in this case in particular the idea of trying to rationalize poor decisions made with the excuse of a long past, ill fated teenage love affair is ridiculous. It felt to me like the story was trying to illicit more emotion than it deserved…definitely not my kind of thing.
