I don’t even know what to think of this right now. To be honest, I didn’t read the back of the book or anything, so I’m kind of going into this one vulnerable… But if this is some kind of reality show, wtf? Why is the place trashed? Why are the girls cleaning up after the last people? And WHY did they wake up here without remembering how they got there??? Or did I misunderstand?

Cults & Other Darkness
As a survivor of a dark cult in my childhood, I have gravitated toward cult books all my life. While I appreciate nonfiction that shows how cults operate and such, what really helped me most were the stories. The real survivor’s accounts, as well as fiction written about cults and secret societies. Stories saved my life and helped me heal.
This list is for fiction and memoir stories that feature cults, secret societies, and/or manipulative leaders.

“That was part of being a girl—you were resigned to whatever feedback you’d get. If you got mad, you were crazy, and if you didn’t react, you were a bitch. The only thing you could do was smile from the corner they’d backed you into. Implicate yourself in the joke even if the joke was always on you.”
😭 😭 😭 But why is this so disgustingly true??? Being a girl was super hard!

This is one of those books you’re meant to hate the main character right? Because girl….

Its the kind of book where you wont like the main character. But the writing is great— fast paced and captivating. Sometimes the concepts mentioned are too high level academia, feels pretentious.

“So much of desire, at that age, was a willful act. Trying so hard to slur the rough, disappointing edges of boys into the shape of someone we could love.”
The painful truth of this!!! I feel like I spent my whole adolescence trying to smooth the disappointing edges of people into someone I could love.

“their laughter a rebuke to my aloneness.” These words hit deep. Pain like this can easily become destructive. And I’m afraid it WILL become destructive very soon.

It's sentences like, "A herd of charging, heavily pregnant rhinoceroses would have been quieter than the children were at that moment," that have me chortling. It hits the reader's sweet spot of enjoyment when a clever description draws up an accurate, metaphoric image in one's mind.
