Before starting this book, you should read the prequel (a short novella), it greatly added to the experience. I’m always afraid when starting a book written by an author I do not know. I can’t count how many times I was disappointed, especially when the summary makes it looks like the book will have everything I want and love from a story. As you might have guessed, I was not disappointed! An ace King who lives for his siblings and his Kingdom. His Knight who is deeply devoted to him and his family. A very very slow burn. Adventures. Longing. And political intrigue? Yes please! The world building is very good, the story is captivating and the book is well written. The characters, especially are very well built. They all have their own character and I loved to see their interactions. I just need Richard to stop betting, he made me so anxious! Richard’s asexuality was beautifully portrayed and I loved how it added to the plot, his character is so complex I just want him to get even more hugs, love and support than he already has. His siblings are the best and if anything ever happens to them, I don’t think I will be able to get over it. I would definitely love to read a short side story about them. Same for Kaelen’s parents. And Kaelen is just perfect. I love how serious he is and how flustered he gets as soon as Richard compliments him or smiles. I kind of missed his point of view at the beginning but Richard is 100% a great main character, I wouldn’t change anything. I definitely think those two are going to make us cry and I’m not ready. (I definitely did not already cry toward the end of this book. That wasn’t me.) Anyway, « The Sun King’s Dawn » is skyrocketing to the top of my list of favourites queer fantasy books and Briar Niran is going on my list of favourite authors. I just can’t wait for book 2! Does anyone knows when it is planned to be released? I need to buy it as soon as it is.
