3.75 rounded up - Weird little book. I think I am exactly the target audience and I had the best time reading it! I could not stop laughing and cringing and by the end everyone grew on me and became a little mentally ill family. Despite the subject matter it ended up having some really touching moments that I thoroughly enjoyed.

While I enjoy varying and complex writing styles, a favorite being Juan Rulfoās dream like styling in Pedro PĆ”ramo, Iām not sure if the overuse of thesaurus words is hitting for me especially when they arenāt all used in a way that makes sense i.e. swapping out a known horse pattern ādappledā for the synonym āstippledā. The authorās prose is actually quite enjoyable when they lay off the excessive synonym use. I donāt know I feel like thereās a difference between using big words effectively and just throwing them in for the sake of it. I assume it is partly done to emphasize the fairytale aspect and the oddness of the main character but Iāve yet to be convinced it is impactful enough to the story that it is worth how disjointed it makes the prose. tldr; could be personal preference but not sure if Iām into prose where the primary stylistic feature is words that you would come across in wordle rather than daily life (even if youāre well read) That being said itās early in the book and I hope the author makes me change my mind.

Great debut novel with beautiful prose and a backdrop of horror. I love how Monstrilio explores aspects of family, queerness, grief, and the idea of monstrosity showing how varied these experiences can be throughout the novel. When M was little he reminded me so much of a naughty little cat I couldnāt resist feeling affectionate. Iām looking forward to seeing more of the author. Also a note to anyone interested in reading: Itās literary horror so donāt go into it with expectations of being scared, itās a stunning novel about relationships, grief, and the nature of monsters and a completely worthwhile read but only if you are open to that.
