Post from the book forum
This was a Christmas gift from my Czech boyfriend. One of the first things we bonded over (along with FFXIV, gardening, and baking) was books. With his help, I'm dipping my toe into Czech literature and I am excited to start with this speculative satire by one of the greats.

Overall Impressions This was more of the same shallow world-building, sloppy prose, and swiss cheese plotting that bothered me in book one. I was a little less angry at this point because I decided to let go and enjoy as much of the ride as I could. It was still a big nothing burger of a book and felt like a waste of time. What was the aim of the book? How well did the author fulfill it? There’s a poignant story about generational trauma, what it means to be human, and the expansive, world-shifting power of unselfish love in here somewhere. The book just needed a heavy developmental edit to find it. Additional Thoughts This book was more hole than plot. So much of the critical events were hand-waved or sloppily explained after the fact. One egregious hole was when Remy and Xiaodan went to visit Xiaodan’s mother, the queen and had an entire conversation with her and her bodyguard. Then several hours later, they’re informed that there was an attempt on the queen’s life the night before. Like, what? We were just there! Did no one think to mention the assassin??? It seems like everyone in this book is allergic to conversational segues. Please, you are all shifting the topic so radically, I keep double-checking to make sure I didn’t miss a time skip. Still not over Peanut the undead horse. Malek is so frustrating and not in a sexy way. I know he’s supposed to be stoic and reserved, but can we please get a crumb of personality or actual chemistry between him and Remy? I am starving! Would you recommend this book to others? Who is the target audience? Absolutely not. Do not waste your time on this book. There are so many better books out there.
