I found explaining to other people what intermezzo is about to be quite difficult. There’s not really a linear plot line. We follow two men on their own journeys dealing with their grief in their day to day lives. While on this journey, we get a deep, in depth view of not only their thoughts but also the way they think. While Ivan is structured and easy to follow, Peter is hectic and sporadic. It’s quickly apparent that none of the characters are good or bad. All have flaws and depending on your own outlook on life, you will gravitate towards different characters. I found myself constantly flip flopping between liking one of them better than the other. But that’s the beauty of this book, you get to see both sides of a story and have to come to accept that there most likely is no universal truth to certain events, we make our own truths and have to reconcile that with others. Family dynamics are complicated and this is portrayed in a beautiful and almost haunting way in Intermezzo.
