Oh it's getting good. I'm falling in love with this series, it's just so well constructed. These characters are so alive and the town is so lived-in. I really enjoyed Sister coming into her own as a character in this one, as well as Queenie who is also so endearing even though she's chaos.
This one continues the trend it seems of these books really only having about 2 horror scenes in them each. Still feeling primarily like historical family drama with just a sprinkle of horror to keep you on your toes. Can't wait to keep going!

From the provocative and challenging to the emotional and quiet, Japanese literary fiction tends to be nuanced, introspective, and minimalistic. These books contain layered cultural commentary and may lean on psychological, surreal, or fantastical elements to convey their message.

I’m intrigued. This was very well written and I’m living for the setting. Also really excellent character work as well. Mary-Love is so lovably hateful and Elinor is so hatefully lovable. I’m definitely going to keep going with the series for now.
I will say, this reads more as historical fiction than it does horror, so don’t pick this up if you’re looking for scares. It’s really a period family drama with some light horror sprinkled here and there. Very much up my alley.
