I wanted to like this book so bad! The beginning was really interesting and the multi POV storytelling was great. I loved that there was an animal companion of sorts and an epic quest with all of the characters coming together. However, the plot really dragged and I found myself bored. This is not a long book but it felt like it took me forever to get through. If it had been told as a cozy fantasy of three strangers heading out on a journey together, I could have liked that - but itâs framed as this action adventure story when nothing really happens for most of the book. Even the mystery of the monsters attacking them, once we found out the reason it just fell flat and was very unsatisfying. The ending felt rushed and fairly predictable.
I donât think Iâll be continuing this series, but I did like Hannah Kanerâs writing so Iâd like to try something else by her.

I had a lot of fun with this book. It was easy to read/digest so I flew through it. Itâs kind of like Bridgerton but the queen is a bored sadistic fae who will take your fingernails in exchange for perfect teeth.
Was the writing the best? No. Did I enjoy it anyways? Yes. Some of the characters were pretty shallow. We were told what their relationship and feelings toward each other was but never really saw it or felt it. Especially between the 6 girls. I did like the one chapter from each of the side characters perspectives, I think that helped give some context to their stories. In the end, the girls relationships and how they band together is really endearing and I liked that aspect of the story because it could have easily gone a different way.
The love interestsâŚI would not call this a love triangle at all. I did really like Emmet and Ivyâs relationship and how it built. I found their connection believable and heart wrenching. Ivy and Bramâs relationship was pretty clear from the beginning and one dimensional.
The plot was very predictable, but that didnât make the ending any less intense or hard hitting. I will definitely read the next one to find out what happens. Overall this is a book I would recommend but probably not re-read. It is classified as YA and the writing style reflects that, but that also makes it a fun and quick read.
