Steven Moffat just gets the Doctor I fear. Him being vain and egotistical and dangerous, unable to take things seriously, but also caring and genuinely wanting people to be okay. He has his rules (never cruel or cowardly) because he knows he's capable of being cruel and cowardly but he tries so, so hard not to be
