This book is exceptional. Said to be a true story, it takes place in the frontier prairie of Canada. Read it if you like books about nature portrayed realistically. Don’t read it if you are a full blown skeptic, because the true story seems pretty unbelievable, or you can’t handle it when an animal dies, because there is a lot of animal death in this book.

it’s ok I guess. The characters are fun but not well developed. It seems like an afterthought of the movie which is exactly what it is. If you want a brain candy fantasy, it will do. Or, you could just watch the movie which had the advantage of Val Kilmer.

This is a charming book of short stories set in rural Canada. Several of them are based on folklore. Cameron has a great casual regional writing style. Her main characters are always women or girls, and they are often travelling musicians who are getting out of bad circumstances. I will be looking up more of her work.

These are quick little odd stories about animals. Unfortunately they are also filled with horrible animal deaths so if you don’t want “did the dog die” plots DO NOT read this book. Lispector has a charming and friendly writing style.

This was a powerful story about a young black gay kid. My heart broke for him as he was describing the complex relationship he had with his parents. All of the characters were very complex. Note: this is a prequel and refers to another book which is a must read after this one. I listened to this on audio and the reader was fantastic.

While this is an extremely well written book with a clear voice, the main character is just so unlikeable. It’s a vignette of just a few days in his life.
