first things first, thank you Max Doty & Netgalley for this e-arc (with no requirement of review btw, but it feels like cheating you guys if i don’t give you my thoughts).

i’ve never seen a haunted house done like this. this is a whole new level, nay this might have to be a whole new type of genre. this house isn’t haunted in the traditional sense, this house is alive. and it’s hungry.

you know how sometimes people describe houses as living breathing thing, having a personality, and what not. well, this house actually is. it’s got likes, dislikes, preferences. it has a memory, it feels pain, it feels joy. the house might be my favorite character .

moving on, i really enjoyed this. yes the pacing felt awkward, it suited the story. it felt like we were in claire’s mind, the pace followed her emotions: fast when she was overwhelmed, slow when she was relaxed.

there was a wild array of characters, each with their own flaws and strong personalities. i can’t really even talk about them without spoilers. but i will say, i was so vindicated in hating who i did without reason, and i grew to love ava.

overall, i need more living houses. thank you.

Although I still liked this third installment, I’m not sure I’ll read a fourth book if another one comes out. The sort of "monster of the day" element for each book is always unique (and this one was especially fun and weird), but I want more of an overall arc to the series as well. It still seems like we know very little about Easton, and we’ve read three books with them as the main character.
