Thoughts from 21% (page 67) What do the coloured bars signify?

Curious about what the coloured red bar on page 67 (chapter 4, when they're walking through the woods) signifies? Looks like it could be a sign but there's also a black bar on page 28 (chapter 2, scene where Aisling is running from her room) that seems randomly placed. Does anyone know what the bars mean?

Oh man— as an anxious, neurodivergent person myself, reading about such a supportive, thoughtful family is both so sweet and mildly upsetting. It’s kind of mind-blowing to see a kid being taught these coping mechanisms early on, and having their needs thought of before they need to voice them, and respected when they do. Mind-blowing.

It’s hard to review a book I like this much. The writing carried me along in a wave— I don’t know the last time I tore through a book with such a need to keep reading. The characters were so compelling and individually rich, even with a fairly large cast. It also felt so pressingly important right now in this fascist time. It not only decries the mistreatment of laborers, of any oppressed people, but also offers hope in rebellion. It doesn’t just let you sit in misery but shows that there is a path forward even if it’s hard, and the only way to follow it is alongside everyone in your community. It is not a story about solitary heroes or easy solutions. As a kid raised on stories of singular evils struck down by singular guys with swords, I think we all need more examples of complex resilience to complex systems.
