I absolutely LOVED this book! I was hooked from the start: the plot was plotting, and the romance was romancing. Patrick is everything I want in a romantasy love interest: flirty, possessive (but not in a creepy way), protective, and head-over-heels for the main character (Nina). The dual POV was used really well!
It was refreshing to have a romantasy where the main character isn't morally grey. Nina doesn't excuse death, even though they are in the middle of a war. She tries to remain neutral for as long as possible. The book does explore morality in war, with different characters having differing opinions on what means should be allowed. Is it okay for the oppressed group, the crafters, to resort to mass murder and violence to fight the oppressors, the artisans?
Overall, this is one of my favourite reads of the year! It is unpredictable and doesn't fall into typical romantasy tropes. I want book 2 so bad!

I am so sorry and I apologize if I'm raining on your parade but why in hell is incest (step-brotherxstep-brother) so normalized in MM booktok.
Like, hello? I know that people are allowed to read what they want but I am equally as entitled to my opinions as a queer woman. I know that every couple of years there's always the argument of if women are fetishizing gay men by reading yaoi, which I have always stood by the answer no (unless of course they're being weird about real queer/gay couples)
But now that I've entered booktok, more specifically queer booktok, I feel so uncomfortable with how some people talk about these mm books. Specifically, incest. Like okay maybe I was sheltered in the yaoi community but why in the seven seas are we standing all ten toes down defending incest.
It reminds me of that one audio thats like "I can excuse racism, but I draw the line at animal cruelty" but swap racism with incest and animal cruelty as the miscommunication trope.
I just find it so weird (coming from a lesbian who survived the whole Citrus debacle and thought we were all on agreement incest, even if it's not via blood, is BAD.) I once again apologize if I'm raining on your parade, but I just cannot wrap my head around this I am so sorry.š

Oh my god, Patrick is easily becoming one of my favourite bookish men. He is the perfect level of possessive over Nina and I'm OBSESSED
