Reading this in 2026, and knowing this was published in 2018, and seeing just how much those in power in our nation continue to demonize, deport and demand from immigrants has me sick to my stomach and heartbroken for anyone who has, is or will deal with this system. Truly, it must change. It is wrong. No one is “illegal”.

As a white woman, this book was a good reminder of the privilege I have in my community, public spaces and politics (2026). It further cemented my need to actively address & fight against the ignorance and inaction surrounding intersectional feminism. While this may not be "new" news for some readers, I think it's a great refresher for those trying to further educate themselves and staying informed. It's also a great "jumping in" point for those who are hearing this for the first time.

★★★★☆ Overall I'm just a big, big fan of VE Schwab in literally any genre, any format and with any character/story. What can I say?
★★★★☆ Enjoyment Overall, I had a really good time with this story and characters. However, I couldn't help but feel this was reminiscent of Vicious/Vengeful (plot-wise/character dynamics) and it was - at times - a bit confusing.
★★★★★ Quality VE Schwab was a good writer, is a good writer and will (in my opinion) ALWAYS be a good writer.
★★★★☆ Characters I loved the eclectic cast of characters: literal princes to "wizards" to pirates... 100% yes.
★ ★★☆☆ Plot I was entertained but I don't know that I was engaged? I'm excited to see if there's a more complex plot(line[s]) in book 2 and 3.
