I thought this would lean more into the side of a mystery. So far, it's more like a YA contemporary book. Not too bad, it's just not exactly what I was in the mood for. The only thing that I have been liking is the time jump POV where we get to see the mom's childhood during the cuban revolution.

This is definitely my "reading books that have been on my TBR for years" summer

I thought about it for a while and I think with flaws and all, I am so utterly obsessed with it that it deserves the 5 star rating. I believe that if you don't enjoy really elaborate or "pretentious" writing, you will probably hate this one, as a lot of people have. But if you don't mind it, it's completely worth the ride. The author tells a beautiful story about queer friendship through a very complex and gripping mystery-horror plot which I found absolutely delightful. I loved the characters so much and I will be thinking about the book for years to come. Although I would probably recommend being prepared for an open ending....

  • Translation Gaps in Books !

If you've read Babel or speak multiple languages you'll know what I mean, but how do folks feel about translation gaps? I think a good example of what I'm talking about is; when most East Asian languages, especially Japanese, are translated into English the sentences feel oddly clipped or a little too short. I think its just a feature of the two languages and its not a net negative, but I ALWAYS notice it. Im curious if people notice it also? If you do, how does it affect your reading experience? And if you read books in a Non-English language, does English have any similar quirks of translation that you think are interesting? (if you cant tell im a linguistics major)

  • Nonfiction Recommendations?

I have been reading literary fiction, historical novels, classics, and fantasy for a long time, but I have recently started getting into nonfiction. I just graduated with a degree in environmental science, so I have a particular interest in anything nature/biology related, as well as historical nonfiction. If anyone has some recommendations that aren't too heavy for someone who is new to nonfiction, I'd greatly appreciate it!

  • Books like "The wedding People"

Hey Guys! I just finished "The Wedding People" by Alison Espach within less than 2 days and I need more! I occasionally read literary books but I just find them by accident and wouldn't really know how to find more books like this. I really enjoyed how introspective this book was and how all the characters learned so much about themselves through talking to others (very character driven narration). Additionally I loved how flawed everyone was and how it added so much depth to them. It also made me reflect on myself a lot! If you've read the book or generally have recommendations that fit my description please feel free to leave a comment! I would love to read more in that direction 🫶🏻

  • Booktube

i have no idea if anyone else here watches booktubers but just wanted to rave a little about my favourite booktuber, booksandlala. if you’re into horror, lit fit, weird books, (and a little bit of romance/fantasy) i honestly couldn’t recommend her enough. i get so many of my book recs from her and her videos are all about reading and are sooo creative and fun. also a big fan of the most popular booktuber, jack edwards. does anyone else have any booktuber recommendations? especially if their content is horror based 🤩

  • Popular Books

I already have a feeling that not many will agree but have you ever looked at a book and thought, "Why is this so popular?" and you kinda wanna read it. You know you probably won't like it but at the same time, you're really curious and want to find out more. And if you eventually gave in and read it, did you end up liking it?

  • I'm happy to have come across Pagebound!

I'm excited about the app, but I've found that I'm enjoying the website even more than what I expected to! I'm not sure if it's because it kind of feels peaceful not being on my phone (since it's became an extension of work for me), or if it just reminds me of simpler times, when I didn't have a phone and life felt less fast-paced. Either way, it's amazing to have something like this when everything else is filled with AI.

  • Horror Recommendations? 👻👽

Hi everyone! I’m so excited to have come across Pagebound. I am loving it so far! I’m relatively new to the horror genre; I just really started getting into it this year. I’m slowly making a list of books to try as my threshold for all things scary increases, so I wanted to ask: what are some of your favorite horror books?

  • Have you ever changed your reading challenge number half way through the year?

At the beginning I set my reading challenge at 24 books, thinking "on average, two books per month sounds like an achievable goal". But then not only I had to juggle between work and university, I had to endure a reading slump that stopped me from opening a book from like, april to july. I'm slowly starting to read again and i'm super happy about it but I decided to change my goal from 24 to 12 and it's the first time i've done this. I know life is life and sometimes you have to slow down a bit but I guess this hit me because during the pandemic my reading numbers sky-rocketed because (sadly) I had a lot of time available back then, and ever since my yearly book numbers have dropped. I don't know, any thoughts? Have you ever changed your number in the middle of the year or do you maintain it even if you know you won't make it?
