Thanks to Netgalley I read an ARC.

The best part of the book was Moss. A sentient, snarky AI-moss hybrid was everything I never knew I needed. I would read it for Moss alone. Besides that, this was a tale of friendship, forgiveness, and family. Although delightfully queer, if you're here for the sapphic romance you will probably leave a bit disappointed. But there are gay aliens in love which almost makes up for it. A sequel is set to release Summer 2027 so hopefully the sapphic yearning comes to fruition then. I look forward to it!

As a writer, I'm not one to go on the AI witch hunt because that's dangerous for all of us, but this has too many signs to ignore. Besides the "it's not A, it's B. There's a difference" and weird banter that constitutes AI writing, there's some egregious errors here. A character made orange juice yet has peach juice on her hands. Character closes her laptop then stares at the screen. Character A tells Character B she should see her house. The place she stayed the night at already.

The worst part is that the story may have actually been good if it was written by a human being. A shame that I wasted a few hours of my life on this.

Read this for an MFA class but ended up really liking most of the stories we read from this. Jo Ann Beard's The Tomb of Wrestling is my favorite short story of all time. Highly recommend reading for that alone
