Yesteryear certainly brings up a plethora of fascinating themes. (Influencer-culture, gender-roles, motherhood, trad-wife-culture, …)
There are hints of systemic criticism, but most of the story focuses on one complicated woman and her family. - As the characters are so specific and unusual, it is easy to not relate and therefore not feel addressed by the cultural criticism at all. In that, I feel like Yesteryear is playing it safer than I would like it to.
Then again, I was entertained; the plot twist worked for me, and the ending almost made me tear up.
It might be one of those books that are (even) more fun to talk about than to read. I’m certainly looking forward to my Book Club’s opinions.

From ancient monsters to doomed voyages and the crushing silence of the deep, these are stories soaked in saltwater, isolation, and fear. Some horrors surface. Others pull you under.

I increasingly feel like this book would make a good video game. The feel reminds me a bit of Resident Evil Village – though, to be fair, there are probably better comparisons to be made
