The more I reflect and digest this book, the more I like it.
I myself am neurodivergent and I found myself connecting with Christopher on quite a few things (fr what does “apple of my eye” mean 😭 pls) as he perceives the world very literally. It was interesting to have a narrator who is so honest about how they are feeling while having to deduce other bits of information regarding the plot from what he shares with us.
The mystery of the dog resolves around the midway point and I was slightly concerned that I’d be bored but was pleasantly surprised when that wasn’t the case. There is a shift in the perceived “danger” that keeps you on the edge of your seat and rooting for our narrator/MC. This story does not have a typical plot arc, so do not go into this book thinking that it’s an action packed murder mystery because you’ll likely be disappointed. It’s a peek into a character’s life with a murder mystery subplot.
I think more than anything this book highlights how unforgiving and harsh people can be towards folks with disabilities. This book was published in 2003 so perhaps it’s highlighting behaviors that were more prominent 23 years ago as autism diagnoses and research have increased since then. Truly, the most heartbreaking thing about this read is witnessing a 15 year old boy live with parents who reiterate how tiring it is to care for him all the time and who continue to do things that they KNOW make him viscerally uncomfortable. Team Siobhan forever

Maybe im fucked in the head and desensitized but this book isnt disturbing to me at all. Like yes the world is messed up morally but it's not written on a disturbing or uncomfortable way. Im honestly a little bored.
