my first fredrik backman book and my god i was not familiar with his game. his way of analysing people is so real, i was giggling kicking my feet while also sympathising, so many times. like HE GETS people, this is such a people's book. the way he puts forward how humans behave, what motivates them to do certain things, it's everything we notice too but don't put too much thought into and it's like its presented right in front of you in such a fascinating way. i don't know how to put a lot of it into words so just read this short story i'd say, its good.

Not getting over this dialogue in chapter 13

A: "I didn't want to fight them sir." S: "Yes I can understand that. It must be a hard thing to kill a man you don't know and don't hate." L: "Maybe that makes it easier" S: "You have a point, Louis. But some men are friends with the whole world in their hearts, and there are others that hate themselves and spread their hatred around like butter on hot bread."

I'm still sitting with this dialogue because what a view of humanity, what a way of putting it. "Friends with the whole world in their hearts" is that what we are? Is that what I am in my heart? I don't see how I can deny it, because maybe that's exactly what I am. What a nonchalant way of putting such humane observations. John Steinbeck is becoming a close friend of mine (in my heart)
