This was my first Colleen Hoover book, and considering this is usually the one people point to as her best work, I went in pretty curious.
Honestly, I can see why it became so popular. The start was strong, the middle kept me hooked, and I flew through it.
That said, the ending kind of fell flat for me.
I know a lot of people recommend reading the epilogue from the golden cover edition, but even after reading that, I wasn’t completely sold. Instead of answering questions, it mostly left me thinking about all the things that didn’t quite add up.
The whole situation with Verity being paralysed and Jeremy never finding out felt increasingly unrealistic the more I thought about it. There were quite a few loopholes that kept nagging at me afterwards. And what was the point of the sleepwalking subplot?
One thing I did find interesting was the writing style. It feels very uncensored, almost like you’re reading every intrusive thought a character has without a filter. I can’t comment much on her general writing style as I have heard this is a work where she steered from romance.
Overall, I think this book had a fantastic premise and a lot of potential, but the ending didn’t fully deliver for me. If you’re a regular thriller reader, you might end up noticing some of the same issues.
That being said, I’m still pretty excited for the movie.

Could not put this down. Every time I thought I figured something out, the book would hit me with another twist and suddenly I was confused all over again.
The twists actually build on each other really well though, so it never feels messy or random.
Also loved the writing style. Descriptive enough to create tension and atmosphere without dragging, and the pacing makes it ridiculously easy to binge.
The eerie gothic setting added so much too. Everything felt unsettling in the best way.
Definitely one of the top thrillers I’ve read this year.
