this concept is sooo interesting and i liked the different bodies of research used to explain the use of cadavers: their preservation, their utility in research and experimentation, and their history.

but, i really had a hard time following along because the author tends to get very tangential and the topics don’t always flow super well together. there are many different researchers and we switch locations very often, it’s difficult to situate yourself and appreciate the actual research. a lot of talk of her experience talking to the scientists or workers and her personal opinion on how they look, dress, etc which i thought was unnecessary commentary.

you can also tell this book is written in 2002 because there’s lots of dated humour, and comments that frankly today would not have been acceptably published. i still finished it because i liked the topic and the interesting parts were worth the read, but safe to say i will likely not be picking up another mary roach book anytime soon
