Continuing my Dostoevsky journey with Notes from Underground. I am learning to read his novels not as a novel per se but almost as a work of study! His ability to create despicable characters that have such psychological turmoil is like no other. I am so glad I am researching each novel before I read them. It is helping in my understanding and thus appreciating his writing more than I can say. I went with different translators for this one and I have to say even though these are award winning translators, I enjoyed others more.

Thank you @groveatlantic and @netgalley for an eARC of The Mercy Step by Marcia Hutchinson.
What am I missing? This novel was shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction as well as Best Debut Novel, amongst other accolades, so it obviously appealed to a lot of readers (and judges) but I am not sure why? It was well written, yes, but that is all I can say. A unique storytelling perspective from a child's point of view, literally in the womb and her subsequent decade of life. I never really felt invested in this one, the characters, the story, none of it and I am not sure why?
