Applied Leverage by Aaron Sher is the second-in-series witty urban fantasy, this time set in the streets of London. Received an ARC from the author, and here goes my review.
In this book, Connor, the supernatural locksmith, attracts trouble on an international scale. He goes to London with his friend Nia and girlfriend(?) Elise to track down a missing professor.
The writing remains conversational and easy-going. And it carries the same sarcastic spirit as the first book, woven throughout in dialogues and inner monologues.
The pacing is quick, worldbuilding doesn't drag, and the magic isn't overwhelming. There were some moments where I couldn't understand what is what, but as Rourke would have said... add it to list of topics I'm not an expert on.
Mechanical Advantage is a solid sequel that expands the previous world set up previously. A little more political than earlier but magical nonetheless.
There were two things, though, that were quite turn-offs for me. First is the re-naming of characters... When Connor didn't know someone, he gave them a random name (and even if he comes across the real name, he would say/think "Churc... ummm Averill" for that character, almost every time). It was annoying. Then, the constant jabs at British rules. They were a bit much. Once or twice would have been fine. If Connor is so American, maybe the author shouldn't set such international plots in next book(s).
It's definitely a good read for urban fantasy readers or anyone who's looking for a book with magical fights, but with light magic. It's just that reading the previous book in the series is necessary.
