Didion is such an impressionistic writer and I really do have respect for her dedication to wittholding through the details. Her writing was, I’m sure, so sharp and poignant at the time, yet over 50 years removed from the era she’s writing about so much of this is lost to me. It’s oddly very Internet stylistically, in that there is a detrimental self-assuredness in the references she makes. It’s like coming across a Tumblr callout post from a fandom you’re not in. She constructs people, buildings, places as archetypal figures and lets so much imaginative work be done in the act of projection that anyone unfamiliar must do to understand these characters.
