It’s a very sweet book but painfully sincere, I’m struggling to get through it because I’m cynical and evil

I am having so much trouble reading this... I just cannot get into the story 😭 The characters are not compelling and the writing is unnecessarily convoluted and repetitive 🙄

Questioning my time investment from 36%

    Struggling with this one...

I think my main issue is the world building, I'm a third of the way in and still wondering what this world is about. I can see there is a tentative of a big world building, but because neither character knows a lot about it, we are still trying to figure it out with them. The author is throwing stuff at us sporadically (a race, a monster, a machine?, a place) thought them and the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, but without giving us clear links nor a reliable narrator... I'm not sure this kind of big world building + mystery atmosphere works well to keep the reader following without resources to help but maybe it's me?

I usually enjoy big fantasy books with world building but sometimes the audio version can impact my understanding of none existing concepts, maybe I'm just missing a map or a glossary?

(Also I'm not getting really invested in the characters, double narrative giving them less time for character development and world building making it harder to follow what they are doing I guess?)

Really wondering if I'm the only one struggling, if there is going to be a moment where it clics?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️INFINITE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It feels insulting to not be able to give this book more than 5 stars 😟

THIS IS A MASTERPIECE OF PROSE AND STORYTELLING AND DEVASTATION… 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 And look, I know your girl is a crier but holy mother of fuuuuucks the pain this book put me through was unbearable. I felt like clawing at my own skin trying to break through my ribs just so I could rip out my heart and STOP feeling. Instead I weeped and sobbed and begged endlessly while repeatedly reliving their deaths. I think I stopped counting the amount of deadly emotional wounds it inflicted me after like the 7th time? No I’m not being dramatic or exaggerating for the sake of this review. Ask my partner who had to hold and comfort me while sobbed in his arms snotty nosed and mumbled incoherently about why my book was hurting me so much AND WHY I NEEDED TO KEEP READING. Or my best friend who panicked when she heard the sound of my voice in a totally unrelated voice note and promptly asked what the fuck was going on and which hospital I was at before she got to the end of the voice note where I was explaining that I’m okay and if I sounded like I’m crying it’s coz of my book LOL 😬🥲 So please PROCEED WITH SO MUCH FUCKING CAUTION THAT YOU END UP BUBBLE WRAPPED LIKE THE MOST DELICATE GLASS ORNAMENT.

Anyways I’m too fucking emotional to write a more intelligent review so you’ll have to make do with this pathetic rambling until I can get my neurones back in a row 🫠

Thank fuck for that ending otherwise I’m not sure I’d have survived this book 😭😭😭
