Okay, this review is unfairly biased. I read this book coming off the high of the Dearly Beloathed duology, and unfortunately for this book, that duology is everything that this book is, but better. The British humor--with its Monty Pythonesque/Terry Pratchettian flair--the Victorian influence, the romps, and the romance. This book was whipped cream, sweet, airy, but lacking substance. The romance felt superficial and the plot repetitive. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments, but ultimately, I was left searching for a more filling meal.

Let me start by saying I've read all the books in the Halfling universe by this author, and I really enjoy them. I'm also glad to see monster romances getting more mainstream!

However, conceptually, this book just doesn't work. I like the premise - a modern take on the old Gargoyles animated series. However, an MMC who turns into stone during the day and is set in modern San Francisco means that for 75% of the book, the MMC does basically nothing. The FMC is also doing a lot of nothing, I think partially because the story can't move anywhere. This setup is just too tough to salvage, and the only way to do it would be to establish a lot of depth with the characters, which...just doesn't happen. Neither main character is particularly interesting. There are too many repetitive conversations and way too much internal monologue. The FMC's interest in history + the MMC's being a creature from the time period she studies had potential, but it was never really explored.

Finally, I am not someone who is good at predicting endings, but the ending was WAY too predictable. Overall, this felt more like a setup for subsequent books rather than a book that can stand on its own.
