This book took me some time to get into, but the last third hooked me. It was grittier than expected but still managed to be hopeful. It tackled complex topics with many shades of grey in their lived realities - undocumented immigration, complicated relationships to motherhood and mothers, classism, trauma, grief, and queerness. I enjoyed the switch between Patsy and Tru’s perspectives, though it often felt like a gut punch. I appreciated learning more about Jamaica as well. I wish the ending had been longer as it felt a bit rushed, but I appreciated the way it ended.
