A bit annoyed by the aside comments about various synthetic fabrics being “maligned by environmentalists” after droning on about all the positives but not also mentioning the negatives. Author is giving “innovation by any means necessary is good” energy. The lack of nuance is a shame

    🧵

There’s a lot of interesting information in this book, but I found it presented in quite a dry and dull way. Some sections were overly technical and I found myself zoning out a lot. I wish it was presented in a more dynamic and digestible way. The author attempted to go over global history but still had a noticeable Western centrism and bias. I would’ve liked more expansion on areas outside of the US and Europe. She made some odd comments about slavery in the beginning that almost sounded accepting of it for the advances made? Similar comments were made further in the book, referencing synthetic materials as “maligned by environmentalists” after singing their praises and barely if ever presenting concerns they could bring (hello microplastics??) Definitely a strong supporter of capitalism and sometimes blinded by progress to seem dismissive of negative consequences. The section on contemporary textile research also seemed quite long given the book was supposed to cover all of history. It seems she must have skimmed over or omitted interesting parts of history in order to include it.
