Wow this book starts off with a bang, but ngl I struggled to care about what was happening until about 75% in. Most of Black Sun feels like an extended setup for the next book and with the somewhat abrupt ending, this first book doesn't really stand on its own for me. That aside, I ADORED Xiala. Hands down, her POV was my favorite part of the book. Serapio's cool too, I'm excited to see what that crow boy gets up to in the next book. Naranpa was a frustrating POV at times, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a satisfying character arc. Overall, I enjoyed how accessible Rebecca Roanhorse's writing is. Her writing feels very matter of fact which makes for a casual pace most of the time but damn, when you get to certain parts of the book, she does not hold back and I respect it

Tender and magical. The vibes and some of the plot points are a set dressing of Howl's Moving Castle, but filled in with Heather Fawcett's unique touches. I would happily spend more time with her characters and kitties. Especially the kitties.
