Dune was a behemoth - and I’m so glad that I finally tackled it! The novel is rich in detail and incredibly immersive, and it’s so impressive that someone created a cohesive world like this that stands the test of time. The plot and the stakes felt compelling, with the ending remaining open enough for a sequel but still satisfying on its own. The book truly excelled in its exploration of humanity, power, religion, and fate in a world with limited resources - the commentary felt incredibly profound and timeless. I can see why this book is such a landmark work of science fiction.

The only thing that stopped me from giving it a god-tier ranking was the pacing. The first half of the book dragged a bit in my opinion, and I did find myself pushing to get through some of the text. BUT despite that, I felt the push was worth it, and I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series (although maybe not immediately).

For the movie watchers, there were a lot of changes made when it was adapted to film - so much so that I was surprised as I read. Not necessarily bad but something to keep in mind. In my opinion, Paul in the books feels punchier and a bit less likable (at least to me). Ultimately, I loved how all the characters felt more grey and developed in the book. I also really enjoyed reading about the Fremen and learning about the richness of their culture. Paul’s journey from start to finish was incredible, and I really applaud Herbert for writing such a complex and nuanced character.

OTHER COMMENTS:

• The betrayal and Atreides slaughter was brutal to read, and although you kinda knew it was coming, it was still heartbreaking.
• I preferred the book Stilgar to the movie Stilgar.
• The premise of a desert island and melange was so unique.
