Kada vihor rata zahvati pitoreskno bosansko selo, on će pomesti i raznijeti cijeli svijet djetinjstva dviju djevojčica Ivane i Dunje i njihovih obitelji. Od bezbrižnih igara, nevinih djevojačkih snova i velikih maštanja neće ostati ništa, jer smrt će u napadu neprijateljske vojne jedinice jednu od njih, Ivanu, ostaviti u dobi mladosti, u vremenu kada je imala samo četrnaest godina.
U kasno ljeto moćan je roman u kojem Magdalena Blažević o jakim emocijama, o stanjima koja zauvijek obilježavaju čovjeka piše iz perspektive ubijene djevojčice stvarajući univerzalnu priču koja nadilazi Žepče i okolna sela, rijeku Bosnu i vrijeme u kojem je roman smješten te postaje univerzalna himna protiv ratovanja i ubojstava. Magdalena Blažević poput Agote Krištof ili Ingeborg Bachmann stvara svijet satkan od emocija koje kipte ispod savršeno preciznih i jasnih rečenica. U kasno ljeto je roman koji se čita polako jer njegovi strahovi, patnje, snaga, nadanja i tuga izviru iz svake riječi, čime se Magdalena Blažević svrstava u najbolje današnje spisateljske glasove.

Porijeklo je roman u kom Saša Stanišić pripoveda o svom putu iz rodnog Višegrada do nemačkog Hajdelberga, pa opet nazad u bosanske planine, svojoj baki. Here, we grapple with a body forgetting itself—"the mind that / didn't work, the leg that wouldn't move...". Meditations on language are woven throughout the collection. Nouns won't connect and Siken must speak around a meaning: "dark-struck, slumber-felt, sleep-clogged." To say "black tree" when one means "night." Siken asks us to consider what a body can and cannot relearn. "Part insight, part anecdote," he is meticulous and fearless in his explorations of the stories that build a self. Told in 77 prose poems, I Do Know Some Things teaches us about transformation. We learn to shoulder the dark, to find beauty in "The field [that] had been swept clean of habit."

Britko i puno karaktera. Svi likovi su tako živi, naracija pametna i kratko i jasno pogađa u srž. Malo se iznenada završava ali autorska bilješka odgonetne poneku stvar. Završila sam knjigu sa osjećajem zahvalnost što se svijet toliko promijenio za žene u samo dvije generacije, ali i sa bijesom jer je tolikim ženama u istoriji bilo sve uskraćeno i koliko smo ih pametnih i sposobnih zakopali u patrijarhatu i rodnim očekivanjima.

I enjoyed the history and learning about mollies, which I only knew about from that one Queer As Fact podcast episode. I think the author managed to walk the tough line of writing in the tone appropriate for the temporal setting while also keeping it accessible to modern audiences. The pacing was good, and it was a quick and easy read. Now, I didn't really find characters to be very well-developed. Gabriel was interesting enough, Thomas entirely two-dimensional, and among mollies, only the two old queens were fun. The relationship between Gabriel and Thomas was wholly unconvincing to me, they lacked chemistry and tension and their borderline insta love was completely unfounded to me. I hated the revel of the Rat, and actually take offense at the choice of villain.

In Confidence Culture , Shani Orgad and Rosalind Gill argue that imperatives directed at women to “love your body” and “believe in yourself” imply that psychological blocks rather than entrenched social injustices hold women back. Interrogating the prominence of confidence in contemporary discourse about body image, workplace, relationships, motherhood, and international development, Orgad and Gill draw on Foucault’s notion of technologies of self to demonstrate how “confidence culture” demands of women near-constant introspection and vigilance in the service of self-improvement. They argue that while confidence messaging may feel good, it does not address structural and systemic oppression. Rather, confidence culture suggests that women—along with people of color, the disabled, and other marginalized groups—are responsible for their own conditions. Rejecting confidence culture’s remaking of feminism along individualistic and neoliberal lines, Orgad and Gill explore alternative articulations of feminism that go beyond the confidence imperative.

Coco Mellors writes for me specifically. Love her complicated, messy, far from perfect characters. Love how easily she creates chemistry between them. How naturally their conversations sound. This book made me wish I had a sister.
