I'm sobbing, I'm not rating this and I also DO NOT RECOMMEND if you are someone who has started noticing her mom getting older.

I was jokingly going to say "international situationship (with a Turkish man) final boss" because been there, am I right? But after the last 30 pages, I am not giggling.

Looking at it through the modern lense, it's just a regular romance written by a man. Your regular stuff, quite some beautiful prose, some telenovela-esque ending, and questionable writing of the male and female protagonists.

But I can't also help be a little amazed, when remembering the time this was written and by whom. Looked at from that perspective, I find the gender dynamics a lot more fascinating. They might not be so much for our modern standards, but for a book written by a Turkish man in 1940s, Maria Puder's character is beautiful and her relationship with Raif fascinating. Let's not even get into the queerness of pre-Nazi Berlin of it all.

Anyhoot, I get the praise, I get the criticism. I underlined so much of the book. Congratulations.
