Anthony bourdain offers a glimpse into then kitchen, but truly opens up a door into his mind. You see how he was both built for a career as a chef and how the culture and environment shaped him. Reading it far removed from when it was written makes adds a haunting element, as if these experiences fueled his depression. But you can also read it as his glory days, before film and media, when he was inspired to be a chef because he loved it.

This books makes you question how many evil acts have been hidden by political intrigue. And how time has further kept those acts unknown.

“With these men the night comes into the Garmendias’ house. Fifteen minutes later, or ten perhaps, when they leave, the night leaves with them.”

“She forced love into this loveless space, made it the subject of her life. She showed them that she, the Hurricane, was capable of great love, and that if they’d look they’d see they were too. And maybe someday they would understand what they’d enabled, what they’d created.”

Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah writes a magnificent and haunting story about incarceration in the United States. What I found important about the story is that many people who support incarceration reform speak on the punishment of the innocent, but Adjei-Brenyah and his messages of abolition, emphasizes the rights of the guilty. This book may seem like a dystopian but I believe Adjei-Brenyah is trying to show us that the punishment of the incarcerated, and the emotions of the fans, are exactly what we see today.

“Pain was in the body, but pain also seeped into the walls. Pain started in the body, but it latched to a soul and tried to take it. Pain could disappear people”

“I thought about how the world can be anything and how said it is that it’s this.”
