I was intrigued by the concept, especially as I was reading this on the train to Budapest. On top of this it is a highly regarded debut novel from a young author. But after finishing the book I was left disappointed. It feels full of half finished plots and thoughts, and for a book that advertises its magical realism it seems to forget the magical elements in the story, and instead focuses on sub-par plot lines. I believe Biedermann will end up writing more impressive novels in the future, this one needed some more development.

4.75. I genuinely think James Baldwin is one of the greatest writers ever. His rhythmic style is so mesmerizing that every sentence feels like a quote you’d see on a mug in goodwill. He also created such a beautiful and heart wrenching story in this novel.
“Love him,’ said Jacques, with vehemence, ‘love him and let him love you. Do you think anything else under heaven really matters?”

An interestingly layered and enjoyable book. The satire was intriguing and the humor was great. Had to read a summary after every chapter as I missed like a million things and didn’t understand half the references.

The Joke
Milan Kundera
All too often, this brilliant novel of thwarted love and revenge miscarried has been read for its political implications. Now though, a quarter century after The Joke was first published, and several years after the collapse of the Soviet-imposed Czechoslovak regime, it becomes easier to put such implications into perspective in favor of valuing the book (and all Kundera 's work) as what it truly is: great, stirring literature, that sheds new light on the eternal themes of human existence.
The present edition provides English-language readers an important further means toward revaluation of The Joke. For reasons he describes in his Author's Note, Milan Kundera devoted much time to creating (with the assistance of his American publisher-editor) a completely revised translation that reflects his original as closely as any translation possibly can: reflects it in its fidelity not only to the words and syntax but also to the characteristic dictions and tonalities of the novel's narrators. The result is nothing less than the restoration of a classic.

Rovnaký osud postihne aj posledného šerifa. Na jeho miesto nečakane povýšia Juliette, mechaničku zo strojovne z najhlbších poschodí sila. Jules veľmi nedbá na zvyky, aké by mala ako šerifka dodržiavať, a postupne odhaľuje náznaky sprisahania, ktoré môžu ohroziť krehkú rovnováhu panujúcu v sile.
