"[...] if your dear heart is wounded, my wild heart bleeds with yours. In the rapture of my enormous humiliation I live in your warm life, and you shall die—die, sweetly die—into mine. I cannot help it; as I draw near to you, you, in your turn, will draw near to others, and learn the rapture of that cruelty, which yet is love [...]"
Such a beautiful ornate prose. Difficult to understand at a glance. And it camouflages the danger in which the protagonist really finds herself.

I love how even nowadays bending down to pet the dog is customary to avoid awkward circumstances. Dogs always seem to lighten the situation at hand!

I'm not usually big on the romance aspect of a novel nor do I find myself focusing intently on it but oh, how I never want it to end- Lucy and Susannah are so real and dear to me. Never before have I read about two characters with so much and tension and chemistry as these. I'm quite scared to see what's going to happen after this chapter as there is so much left to blow through! Howarth, please don't break my heart or I will be inconsolable for the next year of my life. It's so tempting to finish the whole thing in one day but I just need time to sit with the story and absorb the beautiful writing line by line.

Some of the below series have heavily debated starting points and book read orders--in those cases the pilot was selected based on what seems to be the most popular approach.

Very excited to start this. The girl checking me out at the book store I bought it from was really hyping it up.

Well, Rebecca really is the definition of haunting the narrative. I wonder how the narrator is going to deal with the gnawing discomfort of the lingering past that the first Mrs de Winter leaves behind.

Du Maurier's ability to paint a picture with words so carefully picked is amazing- you can imagine yourself in the narrator's position so vividly. She writes so fluidly you almost don't realise how seamlessly she fluctuates between first, second, and third person to further enable reader immersion. Just wonderful!

An introduction to the Classics, these books are part of the cultural zeitgeist or the 'canon' that many would recognize. Look for more niche titles in later Starter Pack volumes.
