Hello,
I’m new here and trying to get more involved ! Just reviewed Tristana (I think it might be the first review for it here? 👀)
I’ve set myself a ‘read local’ challenge this year - one book by an author from each country I travel to. So far I’ve checked off 🇧🇷🇺🇾🇦🇷🇪🇸
Anyone else do this? Would love far flung recommendations with a strong sense of place 🗺️
Next stop: 🇵🇱 (but recs for anywhere welcome!)

From the provocative and challenging to the emotional and quiet, Japanese literary fiction tends to be nuanced, introspective, and minimalistic. These books contain layered cultural commentary and may lean on psychological, surreal, or fantastical elements to convey their message.

Really moving. I read it on a long-haul flight, bit of a mistake! The way it captures grief as both ordinary and unbearable at the same time really resonated. It’s something I don’t think I truly understand from the outside, watching someone close to me go through loss. The food sections can be overdone, but at least they actually serve a purpose here (‘Butter’, I’m looking at you 🙄). Overall really good, and the writing kept me hooked even when I knew exactly where it was going.

Opened well, but lost me in the middle as it got a bit repetitive. Don’t mind the gruesome elements but wanted more from the mother/daughter relationship and queer representation. The ending felt slightly telegraphed, a lot of waiting around in the middle to get there. Fine overall, just didn’t quite land for me.
