  • Any long series that aren't very heavy recs?

I love long, sprawling series, and they account for most of what I read. However, I mostly don't jump between series, but binge read the same one/ones until I finish.

Last year I binged The Wheel of Time, and I kinda regret it, as it feels to me like it would work much better as a background read while reading another, lighter (in terms of story complication) series.

I've recently started the Wars of Light and Shadow series, and I feel like it would work better as a background read as well, so if you have any recommendations for long series that aren't extremely complicated I'd love to hear them! (I've already read the Cosmere and the Realm of the Elderlings, and yes, I consider them light, as you can easily follow everything that's taking place)

  • Looking for Science Fantasy Recs!

I want to read more Science Fantasy, as in combo Sci-Fi Fantasy, but need some good recs! I don't tend to like super long series, so nothing longer than a trilogy preferably, and also no unfinished series. Standalones are also very welcome! I tend to prefer women writers, but as long as they actually know how to write women I will also read books by men.

Examples of Science Fantasy I loved- The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin Iron Widow/Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao Hunger Makes the Wolf/Blood Binds the Pack by Alex Wells

  • Iconic first/last lines

Inspired by my dad, who loves first/last lines of books and has memorized many, and csdaley, whose favorite book quote is a first line, what's a first line that has stuck with you over time? Maybe it hooked you in to the rest of the book, maybe it set the tone, maybe it's just incredibly quoteable! I've got a couple:

In the myriadic year of our Lord—the ten thousandth year of the King Undying, the kindly Prince of Death!— Gideon Nav packed her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and she escaped from the House of the Ninth. Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderly again. Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier

Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king. The Way of Kings, Brandon Sanderson
