Unequal Affections: A Pride and Prejudice Retelling
Lara S. Ormiston
dietlimca commented on dietlimca's review of The Anthropologists
How can a book with so much leisure awaken such a sense of crisis? I found myself thinking about the book all the time. The author observed and articulated feelings that are just there but have never been given form.
I did not find it comforting at all. It made me confront the sly seriousness of mundane moments in life. Of wanting to build a singular life, of wanting to find community; of the awkwardness of boundaries of friendships and the anticipation of change in life. It's scary.
For the first time, I feel like I read a book that invokes the feeling of watching a film.

I really enjoyed reading the first part of the book - which delved into Patti's childhood, how she began to develop her vivid inner world and her comradeship with her siblings. It was lyrical and evoked a sense of watching folk magic unfold in post-war US.
Beyond that, I do feel like we got a highly sanitised write up of her youth and marriage. I mean, it's her memoir, she can choose what to present in it.
To me, reading about her childhood and the sections where she wrote of her sister (Linda) and brother (Todd) were really special. I will keep going back to them, I'm sure of it.
