Thank you for the author for providing me with an e-ARC via NetGalley.
I think this was a great cozy mystery book. All the storylines wrapped up nicely by the end - except one that will obviously continue throughout the series. I haven’t read the first book in this series but, since they are interconnected stand-alones, I didn’t feel lost or didn’t feel like anything was missing. There was a whole host of characters and the mystery definitely pulled me in from chapter 1. It was a bit predictable but that’s kind of to be expected from this kind of mystery so I’m not mad at it. There were a few times where things sounded a bit cliche or a bit over explained (or rather, repeated throughout the book to explain) though. The writing style in general was good and easy to understand but I think sometimes, some characters’ speech seemed a bit too formal for the situation .. I don’t know if that was intentional or not but it stuck out to me a bit. Despite all that, it’s a great palette cleanser and cozy read. I’m glad I picked it up.

I thought I’d like this book a lot more than I did, actually. I sped through it in two days but I think that was because it’s an easy read more so than that it was a good read. In terms of storyline, I did enjoy it. To start with the positives - the characters are fun, the side characters are supportive and there’s an overall sense of happiness in the community that’s built there (which is always good in cozy fantasies like this one). The dragon babies are super cute and full of character and sass and are generally funny. The storyline was good overall, however, it wasn’t anything groundbreaking (and to be fair, I didn’t expect it to be considering most cozy romance style books tend to follow a formula so I’m perfectly fine with that aspect). The romance was cute and I loved the main characters and I can see what the author is building towards and setting up in this book before readers get to the next ones in the series. The thing I had a problem with most was the writing style - it was too repetitive for my liking. Main facts were repeated over and over again in consecutive chapters and a lot that should’ve been said or shown subtly was very obviously stated. There was also a major trend of over-explaining happening, which annoyed me throughout the book. I feel like it needed another round of editing where someone slimmed down the writing.
